Introducing a free, 4-week, Entry to the Wine Industry Academy designed for job seekers aged 19+ 

Plumpton College, in partnership with two highly renowned organisations supporting the UK Wine industry, The Drinks Trust and Wines of Great Britain are pleased to offer a free* four-week course to assist job seekers in gaining entry-level skills, knowledge and support to successfully achieve employment in this exciting industry. 

The course is designed for anyone who is aged 19+, currently looking for work and is interested in working in the wine industry. With an estimated 40,000 new employees required in the next ten years, this industry is one of the fastest-growing in the UK. 

To apply, candidates aged 19+ from across the UK (see exceptions below) currently seeking work and receiving universal credit are eligible to apply. Candidates will have lived in the UK for the last 3 years and/or have leave to remain in the UK. No qualifications are required but basic written and verbal English skills are required as are basic IT skills.

To be successful on the course and reap the benefits of this opportunity candidates will need to be able to commit to the four-week duration of the course, including studying at the college in weeks one and four. For the other two weeks, the course will be delivered remotely which is why a good understanding of IT is required.  

The Drinks Trust are pleased to be able to support job seekers in attending the course by offering several learning bursaries to cover the cost of travel and accommodation. To apply for a bursary please indicate this on the application form. 

 

Universal Credit claimants can also claim travel cost support via their Job Coach in their local Job Centre. Support is provided by the Flexible Support Fund.

Plumpton College will provide a laptop and internet dongle on a loan basis to ensure any candidate can fully participate and complete the course.

Course overview

Week One at College – w/c 6th June 2022 
Day 1 | 12mid-day start. Days 2-5 inclusive candidates will be at college 9.30-4.30pm 

  • Introduction to Viticulture (the cultivation and harvesting of grapes which deals with the series of events that occur in the vineyard and wine production 
  • Introduction to Wine Operations 
  • Visit to Viti Live Show being held at Plumpton College

Week Two w/c 13th June & Week Three w/c 20th June  
Course delivered remotely via Teams (Training and laptop loan will be available in week one) 

  • Employability in the Wine Industry 
  • Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level 1 qualification 
  • Sustainability 
  • Industry Insight Webinars  

Week Four at College – w/c 27th June 
Day 1| 12mid-day start. Days 2-5 inclusive candidates will be at college 9.30-4.30pm 

  • Vineyard Tour 
  • Tracker driving 
  • Forklift driving 
  • Wine tasting

Candidates must be UK nationals or other person with a right of abode in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the UK or British Overseas Territories or Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of learning.

We are not able to provide this opportunity to anyone who lives in the following devolved authorities: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Greater London, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley, West of England, West Midlands, North of Tyne, Sheffield City Region, West Yorkshire.
